2024 Reflections for OHSB

As I reflect on being a part of One Hundred Shares Birmingham since the beginning in 2018, I must admit that I am not the same woman as I was then. I see our city through different eyes. Recalling a prayer drive organized by Jean Castille that took us throughout the city with some of our partners, I began to weep as we drove past ministries all over the city where I have lived my whole life but never knew anything about. Our car full of women were praying for specific ministries and their struggles, needs, and victories. To my right, a mile down the road was the clinic that saw underprivileged clients, then across the way, was a bus parked on the road offering hope to pregnant women. A few miles further down was the school that gives the overlooked children a chance in life; then around that interstate to the left over the hills, was a forgotten housing development where  faithful Christ-followers were loving on those children and teaching them about Jesus. On and on it went; all throughout the city. The faithfulness of these men and women who daily serve the hurting, beautifully exemplify the love of Christ.  I see my city differently now, because I am different.  I better understand the people for whom Jesus came - the sick, the poor, and me.  Because all of us need a savior.

It is with gratefulness that I can report in 2024, OHSB granted two ministries their full grant request.  By God’s grace and through the commitment of our partners, Grace House, who provides stable Christian homes for girls in foster care, received $100,000, and have begun the critical upgrades that are overdue for all five existing group homes which will impact 40 girls.

God also allowed us to grant $82,000 to Hearts in Hands, a group of servants who seek to be the hands and feet of Jesus by providing material funding to serve our impoverished and/or elderly neighbors. They start by building wheelchair ramps, which often leads to other critical home repairs, so our neighbors may live in a safer home.

As we now enter 2025, I realize this will be our 7th year to award grants. Being a part of our group of 197 active partners, we rejoice that we have been able to give a total of $881,500 to 12 Birmingham ministries. We also pray for these ministries and provide financial accountability as we receive regular reports on how the grant money has been applied.  A bonus is that many of our partners become volunteers for the ministries that have been brought to our attention.

Our OHSB partners make it possible.  I consider this a group of sharp, spiritually minded, generous “as iron sharpens iron” women and it is a privilege to do ministry together.  We have been blessed with unity and wisdom as we gather and go about our city with open hearts and open hands. We value each one of you, our partners.

I look forward with great anticipation to the Lord’s work in 2025! Let us once again seek His guidance in joining together with ministries that are impacting Birmingham and furthering the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We have been touched by the Savior and we owe him everything!

Because of Him,

Missi Wesson

ABOUT OHSB

One Hundred Shares Birmingham (OHSB) is a 501(c)(3) organization formed in 2018, affiliated with the National Christian Foundation to hold and distribute funds. Our desire is for a partnership comprised of 100-plus Birmingham women who agree to donate $1,000 to the organization each year for a minimum of five (5) years. Annually, the grant monies are awarded to non-profit Birmingham-based Christian ministries who serve those in need and proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
